For more than a century we have been harvesting carp from the lakes at Knepp. Draining the lakes to catch up the carp also enables the Estate to carry out the regular repairs needed for the lakes' penstocks. Knepp Lake (properly known as Knepp Mill Pond) and Hammer Pond are artificial lakes over 500 years old and need constant maintenance.
In 2012, Arron Standing took over as our partner and today he stocks and harvests all three of the main lakes on the estate. Fewer fish are stocked today than in the past, meaning far less disturbance to the lake bed. Clearer water and more vegetation encourages water fowl - and swans in particular. In 2017 there were 24 mute swans on Knepp Lake - many more than there have been for decades.
